Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
